Sorry guys, but I wouldn't be doing my job as a tester if I didn't point out that this update appears to have made things a great deal worse. Can't speak for the change in ISK reward, as I've only been able to bear to complete 2 matches since the the update went out.
What I have noticed is that lag/ framerate issues, already borderline unplayable, have become noticeably worse. Also, the hatred for mouse and keyboard seems extraordinarily strong in this one - again, that control method was borderline unusable before due to "crosshair hop" where the aim point would jump over, but never settle upon, your target (even stationary and unaware targets could not be aimed upon!). Now it's not just from one side of the target character to the other - the aim point now goes a-travelling and skips across a significant part of the screen as well.
We all (well, most of us) want this game to be a success *so much*, each time it gets worse feels like a kick in the teeth. I'm assuming you're coding beyond the PS3 limits and so over-using HDD cacheing? Maybe it's time to call up the Bethesda guys and see how they sorted Skyrim out? |

Dewie Cheecham wrote:Regarding FPS drops/crashes. Initially I solved it by deleting the saved game file for DUST, and then performing the system restore, option #3 from the Safe Mode Menu.
It helped for a while.
In the end I decided to completely remove DUST, and its save file from both my PS3 and from my Save store on PSN+, did the options #3 and #4 from the safe mode menu, though they probably weren't needed, and downloaded and installed DUST from scratch. The installed file went from 6.7GB to about 2.6GB, I haven't had any FPS problems outside the occasional hiccup on the 5 point maps.
Yeah, did all those. The complete wipe and re-install was yesterday, and I thought I'd turned a corner as I saw some improvement. Then the hotfix came today, and things became worse than ever. So then I did the safe-mode-shuffle, but alas it didn't help. |

Out of curiosity, is your PS3 connected through ethernet cable or wireless?
In the last build I had a fair few lag problems, getting dropped out of games and such. I played over wireless, then when updating to the current build moved to LAN cable on patch day due to the slow download speed.
This build I really have noticed very few issues with lag. I can even play the 5 point skirmish map fine EXCEPT when when there is a dust storm, this lags me out but I believe is a known issue.
I haven't tried playing over wireless with this build yet, but I may give it a shot to see if I notice any difference. The reason I ask this is that it was mentioned in a different thread that someone saw performance problems ease when switching to using a LAN cable.
Hi Korio,
Glad for the feedback, great to hear someone else making a positive suggestion, but I've tried a wireless and wired connection, sadly it made no discernible difference. That was bit of a surprise to me, actually, since I don't have a great wireless solution by any means. Still, it's obviously "good enough" (although that's clearly going to differ from user to user - it'll doubtless be a problem for some users). In fact I've been quite paranoid about network issues of all types (networking is my thing), and have frequently annoyed my girlfriend by asking her to stop using internet while I test something - it never made any difference.
So I have to conclude it's either due to spikes in network latency, or (as we seem to be gathering ever more evidence) that it's the PS3 hardware struggling to keep up with what's being asked of it by the game...
Dust would certainly not be the first PS3 game to have suffered problems, even lag-like issues, as a result of this, varying from delays in texture draw-in to full-blown lockups. Unfortunately (short of replacing the PS3 hard drive with a SSD - at least one user on these forums has reported success with that, but it's certainly not a cheap fix), that means we're kind of stuck. In past such problems, the game's authors have re-coded for efficiency which (taking Skyrim as an example) either pretty much resolved the issue (if you look at framerate analysis before and after) or helped only partially, or not at all if you listen to some others (most notably some users on this forum) .
I should add, that before anyone goes into (another) "I hate Bethesda" rant, I'm using Skyrim to illustrate the point of code efficiency and its effects on PS3 gaming. Please don't take it personally if you have issues with that particular game. |

Mobius Wyvern wrote: The framerate issues have already been clarified as a memory leak in the blowing dust texture, and CCP has already said in IRC that they're currently working on it.
Absolutely, Mobius, I am indeed aware that CCP have discovered a fault, specifically a memory leak, in the dust storm mood code which seems to mainly affect the 5-capture-point maps. The fact that the entire map (not the mood - the map) is to be removed from circulation in today's hotfix suggests that the fault has not been fully isolated yet, or possibly it's just one of those big things they can't change until the next major release via Sony, and this is the best they can do until then. We may never know.
In any event the possibility, indeed the near-certainty, of other bugs remains. This is by no means a jab at CCP - other Computer Scientists using this forum will be familiar with the statement that a successful test is one which finds a bug, not one which doesn't. No (non-trivial) program should ever be assumed to be completely free of errors, especially a complex changing work-in-progress like Dust.
That said, I'm hoping the hotfix nails all the problems we've been having, too Fingers crossed everyone! |
